Annie, released on the 19th of December 2014 and produced by Will Gluck, is a modern take on the 1982 movie, Annie. This movie stars Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz and Rose Byrne. This movie takes on the genre of comedy drama, with its main target audience being young children. A 10 year old foster child named Annie was abandoned by her parents many years ago, and she was only left with a locket. She is now growing up in an orphanage with a cruel caretaker - Miss Hannigan. We follow Annie as she ventures into finding her birth parents, with many bumps along the road, and the discovery of true love and friendship. The original storyline of Annie was thought up by Charles Strouse, which turned into a 1977 Broadway musical production. The 2014 version of Annie holds this same storyline, but with added present day and contemporary components. From the penthouse Annie moves into, to the gala at which Annie delivers a speech, the modernizations are clear in this film. In my opinion, these changes truly add to the movie, and make it more entertaining for a younger audience. It is important to note, this movie does not stray too far from the original Annie we all know and love. The storyline is still very present and we are reminded of the 1982 Annie often, when viewing this film. The casting of the incredibly talented actress Quvenzhane Wallis as Annie was a very smart decision. She embodies Annie's charismatic, humorous, and quirky energy extremely well while also bringing herself to the role completely. Though I found some dialogue to be a little unrealistic, I could still tell these characters were well developed, not simply one-sided. Because of this, the film was so entertaining to view. The cinematography and editing were also elements that stuck out to me during my viewing. I would highly recommend this film to all musical theater fans, fans of the original “Annie”, and simply those who are in need of a fun musical film. I would rate “Annie” 2014 an 8/10, a mustwatch for sure.
