CRISPR A Powerful Way to Change DNA by Yolanda Ridge

Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, more commonly known as CRISPR, is a fascinating new type of technology that is allowing scientists to edit the genes of humans, animals, crops, and many other things. This book will quickly take you through the basics of biology like the structure of DNA and cells and also the history of how things like the Punnett square to help you gain a better understanding of the basics of gene editing. From there you will learn about how CRISPR technology is able to create a chocolate bar that is jam-packed full of nutrients or how we can get rid of disease-carrying mosquitoes, you will also read about how CRISPR could potentially bring extinct animals back from the dead. As amazing as this all sounds, some major ethical issues are bound to happen when given technology this powerful. These issues are addressed in this book and you can find them in the Stop section of the Stop, Yield, and Go pages located at the end of each chapter which discusses the pros and cons of the implementation of CRISPR.

The illustrations in this book are wonderfully done and are nice and colorful to give the reader a better understanding of what is being talked about. Even though this book accurately goes through some of the basics of biology, I would recommend this to people ages 15 and higher because it requires some previous knowledge that can be a little hard to understand, though with enough research people younger may be able to understand as well. This book is an excellent source if you are looking to write a paper for biology or chemistry on genetic modification, or even just to read for your own enjoyment.
