Divergent [DVD]

"Faction before blood”

In a dystopian Chicago society it is divided into five factions based on characteristics. Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the kind), Abnegation (the selfless), Erudite (the intelligent), and Candor (the honest). All sixteen year olds must take a test to help them discover who they are before they choose a faction that they will devote the rest of their lives to. When Beatrice Prior (Tris) turns 16, she faces a hard decision: staying with her family or staying true to herself.  Her choice surprises everyone, especially herself. In her new faction, she and her fellow initiates face challenges physical, emotional, and mental. Tris has a secret that’s been kept hidden, a secret that could either save or destroy the world.

Divergent is a science fiction action movie based on the Divergent novels by Veronica Roth. Starring Shailene Woodley as Beatrice Prior (Tris), Zoë Kravitz as Christina and Theo James as Four. Divergent has a slow start, but once the movie starts rolling, it’s adventurous and entertaining. There are positive messages of strong female leads, identity, being yourself, and loyalty. There is quite a bit of violence (guns, fighting) and some swearing. I enjoyed watching this. I found the characters were complex and well developed. Tris grows as she finds out who she is and what is her place in the controlling society she lives in. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes sci-fi, fans of Divergent book series or Hunger Games.
