The Hunger Games is a fantastic novel written by Suzanne Collins that is set in a dystopian and corrupt future North America. Within this war-torn world, there are no longer countries, only twelve “districts” and the infamous Capitol. The story follows sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a poverty-stricken girl from District 12 and her struggles as the annual “Hunger Games” competition rolls around once again. These torturous games force both a teenage girl and boy from each district to fight each other to the death until only one victor remains, who is swamped with riches and fame. This year, Katniss’ little sister Primrose is also eligible to compete, and there is a chance that she may be chosen in the draw and stare in the face of Death. As the District 12 representative Effie Trinket arrives from the Capitol to select the tributes, the tension undeniably grows, and questions rise. Who will be chosen? Katniss? Primrose? Will they survive the harrowing competition? All of this and more is answered within the novel. I thoroughly enjoyed this book due to its captivating plot, relatable teenage characters, and suspense filled moments. I highly recommend this book for all teenagers who are looking for a great new book to read, as well as those who are interested in the action and sci-fi genres.
