After years of retirement, former star tennis player Carrie Soto decides to step back into the court to reclaim her status and defend her record. The story features Soto’s rise to glory from childhood and the hardships and demanding journey she must face to uphold her title years later. Now in a new age, Soto must navigate modern publicity, fans, and critics who work tirelessly to bring her down. On top of that, she must rekindle old relationships and form new ones if she wants to take over the tennis scene once again. Older and wiser, Soto comes face-to-face with younger and newer competition, where tensions rise and her dreams are questioned. As Soto travels the world and trains relentlessly for her record, anything is possible - even love.
Emotional, funny, and gripping, the story of Carrie Soto will inspire athletes from far and wide that there is no such thing as being past your prime. The fourth and final addition to Taylor Jenkins-Reid’s famous four universe, Reid entirely captures the struggles of the rising athlete. Soto is unyielding and fierce; but despite her flaws, you can’t help but admire and be inspired by this main character! Soto’s relentless attitude, cutthroat ambition, and occasional softness will draw you further into her story. The relationships she makes and loses along the way make for a perfect contrast to the challenging ascend Soto must face in her new era.
Reid perfectly develops the character of Carrie Soto, taking the readers with her on the character’s personal journey, leaving no questions, but only a yearning for more! It was as though I was seated at the very tennis court - watching Soto play live. If you like this, Reid has built a world of women struggling with the hardships of fame in her other works: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Daisy Jones & The Six, and Malibu Rising.
