“War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength.”
Winston lives in Oceania under the watchful eye of Big Brother. He works at the Ministry of Truth, where they write and change the newspaper. He lives in a dystopian future where Big Brother has total control over the population, his food is rationed, his routine is planned, and he has no freedom of choice. One day he buys a journal and decides to start writing, he starts to realise how everyone follows big brother without question. He starts to visit the proles (the poor working class) to try and learn about what life was like before Big Brother. He begins his fight for freedom but will he ever be able to succeed against a force as great as Big Brother.
1984 is a dystopian novel that is a dark reflection of what totalitarianism can do to the world. It explores the themes of controlling media and being under constant surveillance. I think that some people may be intimidated by this novel but its actually fairly easy to read and quite short and it will captivate you from the very beginning. If your a fan of dystopian or other political books like animal farm and fahrenheit 451 you should definitely read this book.
