The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

“You don’t forget the face of the person who was your last hope.”

Panem is a country in the ruins of what was once North America. It’s made up of the Capitol and 12 outer districts. To keep the districts in line every year, the Capitol hosts what’s known as the Hunger Games. Every district must send a boy and a girl to participate in the games, where they’ll compete for their life and a chance to be Champion. The games take place in an arena that has been made to look like the wild and is full of dangers. Spectators watch through hidden cameras and can pay to send aid to their favourite competitors. Katniss Everdeen is a 16 year old from district 12 who looks after her mother and younger sister, and when her sister's name is called to compete in the games she steps forward and takes her place. She has been hunting in the woods for years and knows how to survive but will she be able to make it out of these games alive?

The Hunger Games is one of the most well known dystopian novels and if you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll love it. I enjoyed this book because it’s not just about Katniss's fight for survival; you get drawn into the complex politics around the game and the Capitol, which is super interesting to read about. Peeta is an amazing character as well and him and Katniss’s characters complement each other well.
