Once a year on the island of Quill, all 13 year olds are deemed Wanted, Necessary, or Unwanted. Wanted are the best of the best, they get more schooling and eventually join the quillitary. Necessaries are everyone who keeps Quill running and works on farms. Unwanteds are sent to a death farm. Alex and Aaron are twins, Alex can’t believe it when he is deemed Unwanted but Aaron is a Wanted. As Alex faces his fate of being sent to the dreaded death farm he discovers that it isn’t death that awaits him but a hidden magical place called Artime. The Unwanteds are encouraged to explore their creative ability and use it magically. But while Alex is enjoying his time in Artime it is unusual for twins to be separated into Wanted and Unwanted and their bond stretches across their separation. Artime survival is starting to be threatened by Quill; the two brothers may come face to face in the upcoming battle. 

The Unwanteds is an amazing book that draws you in through amazing world building and character arcs. It starts out on kind of a dark premise but it's not a dark book.  It's much more focused on the magic and is much more of a fantasy action novel.  If you love magic, battles, and amazing characters, this book is for you.
