“The Bright Ages” is a historical novel that attempts to break the stereotypes beset of medieval times. The novel uses historical evidence to explain that this period in history was not one of backwater people, ignorance, and poor hygiene; they were not the “dark ages” in human history. Historians Matthew Gabriele and David M. Perry conclude that they were a time of scientific innovation, cultural development, and societal revolution. Some of the major developments in human history would occur across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa in this time period. This time period was not alien to wars and bloodshed, quite the opposite. Yet the picture which Matthew and David are trying to paint is one not just what people associate with medieval times, but a bright age for human development.
This book was very engaging, it incorporated interesting elements which were balanced with engaging writing and beautiful pictures. The authors included various stories and events in history to demonstrate some of most important developments in this time period. The stories vary from learning how the heirs of Rome would create a new city which would be the grandest in Europe and the world, to the vast trade routes established by the Silk Road largely due to the new rise of Islam which would connect major parts of the world.
Despite everything, the book should be suggested to people who are more interested in history and medieval times. It does not use much historical jargon it explains the current scenario and is well-paced. Still, it is content that would be best enjoyed by fans of this genre. I would highly suggest that other fans of history read this book, as it covers a renowned era and explores events and concepts that are interesting but not well known. Other books which are similar to this which I also highly suggest include “The Battles that Changed History” by Fletcher Pratt. It explores the entirety of written history and explores in an engaging and thoughtful way how certain events changed the future.
