During Linda’s report on whales Caroline passes a note to Jill that says “blubber would be a good name for her”. Jill doesn’t want to think about Linda’s stupid presentation on whales or Caroline’s note, she's too busy thinking about Halloween. Before she knows it Robby grabs the note and half the class has read it. Something about Linda makes everyone want to make fun of her and no one could have known where the fun would end. As Jill’s friends and the class continue her relentless teasing of Linda Jill is stuck between going along with her peers and standing up for what she knows is right.
Judy Blume’s Blubber is an amazing and sweet novel about peer pressure and bullying. Told from the point of view of the bully and focuses on peer pressure and the difference between right and wrong. Through Jill’s perspective we are forced to confront the realities that many kids face, what it's like to struggle with doing the right thing and what it would mean to stay silent. This book will leave an impression on readers of all ages and sparks conversations about empathy, bullying, and courage.
