The Witch Haven by Sasha Peyton Smith

It’s 1911 in New York City and seventeen year old Frances Hallowell is spending her time working as a seamstress and trying to figure out what happened to her late brother, William, a few months prior. When Frances accidentally kills her taunting boss in the shop one night, she is unsettled by what sorts of things might possess her. Not long after, she is taken by two women to a hidden school of magic for girls hours away from her home. That’s where Frances’ questions come to be answered, and she discovers that she’s a witch. She soon realizes that with great power comes great responsibility, and spends her time working on how to control outbursts and accidental magic use. The novel follows Frances’ attempt to use her magic to figure out what happened to her brother, unlock the secrets of her school, and discover what the world of magic that surrounds her is all about. I recommend this book to anyone ages 13 and up who are interested in the world of fantasy and witchcraft! Readers should know that there are a few graphic passages in the book that mention weapons and blood.
