Self-Esteem for Teens is a useful non-fiction guide book, which is applicable to teens and young adults. The author Lisa Schab, a licensed social worker and private counsellor, elaborates on the 6 principles for building up healthy self-esteem, 3 of them being core beliefs, while the other 3 are power filled choices.
The workbook is a great resource for kids and teens as a therapist. For each principle, Schab provides a clear pathway to achieve the goal. Schab goes through 4 sections: learning, exploring, becoming, and finally affirming, all to help your brain set the healthy self-esteem thinking. In the learning section, Schab lists psychology concepts, facts, and counselling practices that the author has provided to her clinical audiences; the exploring section is an exercise section, which helps you discover yourself, know yourself better, which is, in my opinion, the most interesting section, as they are easy, operational methods to help me thoroughly think about who I am, and about what previous experiences have made me like this. After discovering yourself, it goes to the becoming section: exercises for changing. It teaches the reader to re-write messages we receive every day, and make positive changes around the concepts explained in the learning section. The final section, affirming, gives statements that the brain should repeat. It tells the reader that the more affirmations as a part of thinking, the more empowered one will be.
With straightforward prose, Schab demonstrates how we should treat ourselves, what our strengths and weaknesses are, and most importantly, how to accept our weaknesses and rewrite them to positive, unique characteristics. From this book, one can learn how to treat yourself nicely. Preventing abuse against oneself, learning to play to one’s strengths, and practices on how to be good at utilising resources to build up a stronger mind.
Self-Esteem for Teens is a comprehensive toolbox full of new strategies and accessible skills. If you are searching for self-help resources for your spiritual growth, or preparing your personal statement essays, this is the book you want to read.
