Rick Riordan's “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters” is the second book in the series that, much like the first, creatively and fantastically brings the world of Greek mythology into our modern reality.
Camp Half-Blood faces a crisis when Thalia's tree is poisoned, endangering the magical borders protecting the camp. Percy Jackson and his friends embark on an urgent quest with a tight deadline to find the only magical item that can save the camp. To obtain it, they must navigate the Sea of Monsters. Along the way, Percy must undertake a rescue mission to save his friend, Grover, all while discovering a troubling family secret that makes him question whether being the son of Poseidon is a blessing or a curse.
As always, Rick Riordan delivers an enjoyable experience in this series, particularly with its fun and adventurous storyline that allows mythological fans to geek out whenever elements of the original folklore of Greek mythology are introduced during Percy’s journey. With the introduction of new characters and a plot that thickens, “The Sea of Monsters” is just as entertaining and more thrilling than the first. While geared towards a younger demographic, this series is not just for young children alone; adults can enjoy it just as much.
This book is a must-read [or listen] for the series, as every event towards the end sets the stage for a new beginning. If you've already read the first book and are wondering if the second is just as good, I highly recommend continuing this journey with Percy and his friends!
