Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice

“Moon of the Crusted Snow” is a post-apocalyptic thriller by Indigenous author Waubgeshig Rice. Set in a remote Anishinaabe community in Northern Canada, the story follows the community's struggle to survive as a catastrophic event disrupts their way of life. Cut off from power and the rest of the world, the community must band together to survive the long, harsh winter ahead. With its vivid imagery and memorable characters, “Moon of the Crusted Snow” is a powerful allegory that gives insight into Indigenous culture and the struggles they face as a result of colonization.

In a post-COVID world, this novel feels all too real. Rice perfectly builds up suspense throughout the novel to reveal an insane twist-ending. This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys thrillers, literature, or is curious about indigenous culture and struggles.
