Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery by Brom

“Slewfoot” by Brom is a dark, gothic historical/fantasy novel set in colonial New England. The story follows a young puritan woman named Abitha who’s husband mysteriously dies. As a woman all alone in a patriarchal society, Abitha must navigate her new life as whisperings among the villagers claim she’s a witch. In comes Slewfoot, a powerful and mystical creature who helps Abitha defend herself against the village who intends to hang her for witchcraft.

This is by far the best book I’ve ever read. It’s filled with beautiful illustrations by the author which is uncommon for an adult novel. It also highlights the dark past of witch trials and the struggles faced by women in a puritanical society during that period. I loved the intersection of historical fiction and fantasy. The writing was absolutely bewitching and had me feeling so many emotions. It definitely deserves a second read!
