Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan

Daughter of the Deep is Riordan’s first stand alone novel. The book takes place in California in 2021. The novel follows Ana Dakkar, a freshman at Harding Pencroft. She is just finishing her culminating tasks and exams when the plot takes place. She, along with her classmates, witnessed her school crumble into pieces, taking every one in the school along with it. Now, her freshman class has to seek help and fight the rival high school, Land Institute. I love how Riordan experimented with very interesting and dramatic character relationships, my favourite being the relationship between the main protagonist and the main antagonist. This relationship ends up being an emotional brawl at the end of the book. Riordan also snuck a lot of twists and turns in the book. As new information get’s revealed to the reader, eventually everything will come together. However, I wish the book showed more antagonists that sided with the Land Institute. I also wish the book explored deeper into the rationales for the main antagonist’s actions. Overall, Daughter of the Deep is one of my favourite books. If you are someone who loves action-filled books along with some emotional and dramatic twists, then you will love this book!
