The war novel Prisoner B-3087 starts with the main character, Yanek Gruener, living his life with his family in Krakow, Poland. It takes place in 1939 when World War II broke out. Nazi Germany is a powerhouse at the time and their army is separating to go annex other countries. They make their way to Krakow, Poland, where Yanek's family is deported by the Nazis to work to their death in concentration camps. Luckily, Yanek was not taken away because he had hidden when the Nazis' invaded and was able to remain in Krakow. He worked in German-occupied Poland for quite some time before he was also deported to work in the camps. Yanek was deported to Plaszow Concentration Camp, run by Amon Goeth. Yanek and other prisoners were tortured and put through gruelling amounts of work, but it doesn't stop there! Over the next five years, Yanek was put through ten different concentration camps, each having wearying work that he was forced to do. Eventually, at the end of World War II, Yanek survived each of the camps that he was put through and he is reunited with an old neighbour from Krakow. He then restarts his life, moves to the USA, and begins to live the life that he dreamed of as a little boy. In my opinion, I give Prisoner B-3087 a 10/10! This novel is my favourite book that I have ever read. I am very interested in learning about war history, especially the Holocaust. I would recommend this novel to anyone who would like to learn more about the Holocaust and what Jews were put through, as it gives a very in-depth look at what life was like for them during this time.
