Falling is a major cause of injury among older adults, but many falls can be predicted and prevented. Volunteers from the KFL&A Public Health Fall Prevention Ambassadors Program will show how to reduce your risk of a serious fall at each of four identical sessions in November. Free to all older adults, their family members and caregivers, but seating is limited. KFPL is partnering with Kingston NaNoWriMo to offer space for anyone participating in the annual nation-wide challenge to write 50,000 words during National Novel Writing Month. Come meet with fellow participants and get a little work done in a fun, supportive space, with WiFi, outlets and possibly snacks.  The Community Room at Calvin Park Branch will be open three times: Thursday, November 1, and Thursday, November 13 (both 6 to 8 p.m.) and Saturday, November 24 (2 to 4 p.m.).  Drop in; no registration required.

Think classical music is dated or boring?  Think again!  Join Evan Mitchell, music director of the Kingston Symphony, for a look at orchestral music that will shake you up — literally.  Performing pieces on percussion instruments, Evan will also delve into the mysteries of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and share the forces that led him to choose a career in conducting. Award-winning author Jean Rae Baxter presents participants from her autumn session of Telling Your Story:  Seniors' Writing Workshop Series at Sydenham.  Each will be reading excerpts from the personal memoirs and family histories they created during the workshop series.  Saturday, November 3, Sydenham Branch, at 2 p.m.  Free admission; no registration required.
