The Hunger Games [DVD]

The Hunger Games is an action/sci-fi, dystopian film originally based on the book written by Suzanne Collins with the same title. As the annual Hunger Games continues to be hosted by the Capitol of Panem, 24 tributes are chosen, 2 from each of the 12 districts, to compete against each other as a form of punishment for rebellion against the Capitol. Katniss Everdeen and Peter Mellark find themselves in a violent and difficult position as they compete against the other 22 tributes for their lives. The Hunger Games is a heavily thought-provoking film about power, rebellion, fame and wealth that dives deep into political disagreements. I enjoyed this film a lot because it always keeps you on edge. The suspense of the whole game is done extremely well, and it starts to feel like you’re in the games with the Tributes. Although Jennifer Lawrence does an outstanding performance as Katniss, you can easily sympathize and connect with her character, Donald Sutherland as President Snow steals the show for me. He’s such an intimidating yet quiet character who shows his true intentions and evilness with such little words. Whenever he’s on the screen talking to someone, you feel a sense of worry for the person he’s talking to because he has full control over them. Although The Hunger Games is a popular and already well-known movie, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys action and violence, especially teens as I think many teens would find this story about political power and rebellion intriguing and could relate to the feeling of being rebellious.
