Get Outlandish at the library!  

Inspired by the novels of Diana Gabaldon and a love of all things Scottish, this May Kingston Frontenac Public Library is delighted to bring you Outlandish!

The Outlandish Gala

Saturday, May 14, at 2:30 pm

Foyer, Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts

The Outlandish Gala kicks off Outlandish with the Rob Roy Pipe Band & Highland Dancers in an exciting music and dance collaboration featuring the Outlander theme song, and a mix of traditional and modern pieces in the foyer of the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts. Stick around after the show for a meet and greet with the performers. KFPL would like to acknowledge the support of the Ballytobin Foundation in bringing this event to the public. This is a free event, but registration is required.

Please note, there are 100 chairs available for this performance and room for 150 in standing room, or sitting on the risers adjacent to the stairs. The 100 chairs will be available on a first-come first-serve basis when the doors open at 1:30 pm. Patrons with accessibility concerns should email kevans@kfpl.ca to make arrangements.

The Celtic Kitchen

Sir John's Public House

Join local chef and food historian Paul Fortier for The Celtic Kitchen, a free haggis tasting and presentation on the history of Scottish cuisine. The event will take place in the Great Hall located on the second floor of the pub. Please note that this location can only be accessed by stairs. A cash bar will be available for attendees to purchase their own beverages. This is a free event, but registration is required.

Outlandish Kids: Brave

Isabel Turner Branch, Community Room

A family movie set in Scotland about a Princess named Merida who is determined to follow her own path. She unknowingly unleashes chaos in her kingdom after making a wish. Rated PG. This is a drop in program. Admission will be on a first come, first served basis. Caregivers of children under the age of 7 must remain in the program space; caregivers of children ages 7-11 must remain in the library during the program.

Highland Regimental Broadswords

Join Broadsword Academy Kingston and Ironwood Sword School at the Central Branch for, an informative talk and demonstration of Scottish Swordsmanship, as practiced in the 18th and 19th century. See and handle training weapons and learn a thing or two from expert instructors. This is a free event, but registration is required.

Anti-Screening: Highlander

Central Branch, Wilson Room

There Can Be Only One! Join us for an anti-screening of the midnight action movie Highlander starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery in this R-rated cult classic. Wear your tartan, kilt or 80's hardcore costume and prepare to feel the Quickening... Run time 107 minutes, Drop In. Outlander themed colouring pages and refreshments will be available to enjoy during the event. Anti-screenings incorporate additional activities, including colouring and knitting, the wearing of theme costumes and audience quote-along isn't discouraged!

Highland Knit-Along

Every Wednesday evening in May, 7 pm

Isabel Turner Branch

The Isabel Turner branch is hosting a Highland Knit-Along. Knitters at all levels are welcome to knit-along with the group. We'll also have a variety of Highland knitting pattern available.

Scottish Kingston Walking Tour

We're also offering two walking tour pamphlets -- Scottish Kingston Walking Tour of the Central Branch Neighbourhood and Scottish Kingston Walking Tour of the St. Andrew's - Skeleton Park Neighbourhood -- that will guide you through some of the homes and haunts of the Scots who shaped early Kingston. (Please note, these walking tours print best on ledger-sized paper, 11 x 17). You can pick up a copy at any of our branches or download it from our website.
